LOCK HAVEN – Several Lock Haven University faculty members have been told of a possible layoff as the university continues to track the Pennsylvania state higher education system to the right size.
This time, 28 professors have been notified that they have been identified for possible dismissal, which will come into effect at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year.
“LHU continues its efforts to achieve financial sustainability. This is a necessary and fiscally responsible effort that is entirely separate and distinct from the integration process ”, Elizabeth Arnold, executive director of strategic communications at LHU, said. “Achieving sustainability involves a comprehensive strategy that includes budget cuts as well as staff reductions across the university. “
Arnold confirmed that 28 faculty members had been contacted about a layoff.
“Twenty-eight faculty members have been contacted regarding the possibility of layoff at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year and will meet with administration later this month to determine where else in the unit. negotiation they might be able to do a job. “ Arnold said.
The university was ordered by PASSHE in 2020 to dismiss 47 faculty members. The decision was made in an effort, along with cutting programs or putting them on moratorium, with the aim of “good size” the university.
The talks on dismissing faculty and cutting programs began in 2020 as the entire PASSHE system faced economic hardships due to the low number of students enrolled at its universities. Since peaking at 119,513 in 2010, PASSHE registrations have fallen to 95,494 in fall 2019.
In July, PASSHE’s board of directors voted to integrate six of its universities into two entities – LHU, Mansfield and Bloomsburg in the east and the universities of California, Clarion and Edinboro in the west.
Officials said earlier in the year that COVID-19 accelerated proper sizing which included integration.
Integration should begin at the start of the 2022-2023 school year but, according to the proposal presented to the PASSHE board in April, each university “Incorporate the current name of the location… and continue to leverage (each name) in the traditional ways, including student recruitment, alumni and donor relations, branding, marketing , etc. “
