In a recent print edition, Mundo Deportivo mentioned that Arsenal have rekindled their interest in Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas. It is understood the Spanish centre-forward has a €70million release clause which the Gunners are ready to match during this January transfer window.

De Tomas’ impressive form in Spanish football this season

The Madrid-born talent is enjoying a decent season at the RCDE stadium after producing a string of successful performances at the top of Espanyol’s attack. De Tomas has scored 12 goals and two assists in 23 appearances for the Spanish side this season in all competitions.

The 27-year-old has caught the eye by averaging 3.6 shots, 0.8 assists and 1.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He was even excellent when distributing possession in the opposing half after completing 83.6% of his pass attempts in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Will De Tomas be a decent signing for Arsenal?

De Tomas is a moderately paced striker who can get into promising areas on the attacking side of the pitch. He excels at generating a yard of space for himself to get a shot on target. The Spanish sniper can even create a few inviting chances for his teammates up top and has a good leap in him that allows him to win aerial duels for his team. He’s usually quite smart with his movements in and around the opposition’s penalty area and has a lot of power with his shot attempts.

We can expect de Tomas to add plenty of goals and some physicality to Arsenal’s attack if Mikel Arteta can find a way to get him involved before the end of this transfer window.

The 27-year-old Spaniard is currently playing in his prime, so the Gunners can hope he would be able to make an immediate impact in the Premier League if they manage to secure his services in January. However, only time will tell if he can maintain his good form in England. Still, de Tomas will be a good signing for the North London outfit as long as they can find the funds to secure a deal for him.
