Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in race to sign Angel Di Maria

Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria is attracting interest from several European giants, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

According to Tutto Mercato Web, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have now entered the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria. Juventus and Benfica are also interested in the Argentine, whose stay at Parc des Princes is set to end after the current campaign.

The 34-year-old former Real Madrid and Manchester United star’s contract expires this summer and he will be free to join any club on a Bosman transfer. With a wealth of experience under his belt, Di Maria could be a highly sought-after entity in the summer window.

The Argentine star joined PSG after a disappointing spell with Manchester United in the Premier League. He became one of the most important players for the French club and has since made 291 appearances for them in all competitions. He helped the club win four Ligue 1 titles as well as other cup competitions but couldn’t lead them to the elusive Champions League title.

Di Maria, however, has a Champions League medal to his name which he won with Real Madrid in the 2013/14 season. Manchester United immediately called but the Argentine struggled to settle in England and scored just four goals in 32 appearances for them before moving to Paris in 2015.

His association with PSG is finally coming to an end, but Di Maria’s consistency has meant there are clubs lining up to secure his services even at 34. While his former club Benfica have shown interest, Juventus have reportedly made contact with his inner circle to discuss the details of a possible transfer.

But it won’t be easy for interested parties with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid entering the fray. Both Spanish sides are eager to challenge for the La Liga title again after a lackluster season and have identified Di Maria as a player who can help accelerate their return to the upper echelons of Spanish football.

Barcelona are yet to extend Ousmane Dembele’s contract and would need a right-winger if they fail to convince the Frenchman to sign a new contract. As for Atletico Madrid, the Rojiblancos are on the lookout to add more experience and quality to their attack as they prepare for Luis Suarez’s departure. Di Maria, to that end, has become a target for both clubs according to the report.

The Argentine has played in La Liga before, having spent four seasons with Real Madrid between 2010 and 2014. And his free agency status also makes him an attractive prospect. However, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona or Atletico make an approach for Di Maria.
