Barcelona coach Xavi wants to sign 25-year-old Spanish midfielder

Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez is said to want the club to sign Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz.

According to the Spanish publication El Nacional (via The Hard Tackle), Xavi is keen to bring Ruiz in at the “first possible opportunity.” It should be noted that the 25-year-old midfielder has also been linked with Barcelona before.

The Catalans are currently fortunate to have options in midfield. Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Pedri, Pablo Gavi and Nico Gonzalez are currently fighting for places in the starting XI. However, Pedri’s successive injuries this season have shown Barcelona that the club cannot afford to overload their teenage stars.

I’ve seen so many reports of Barcelona trying to get Fabian Ruiz this summer. If we somehow manage to get it back in the summer of 2022, oh my lord. He would fit in perfectly with our squad and we have so many players we can rotate. His contract expires in 2023 and he doesn’t want to renew it.

While 17-year-old Gavi and 19-year-old Nico have brilliantly managed to become first-team regulars, the Blaugrana could do with a little more experience in midfield. The signing of Ruiz, who already knows Spanish football well after playing for Real Betis, would be a no-brainer for Barcelona.

The Napoli midfielder can play all three positions in midfield and will be a valuable asset for this youngster Blaugrana side. Ruiz could also help Barcelona ease the burden on Busquets, who turns 34 next July.

Barcelona goal Fabian Ruiz has enjoyed a good club career so far

Fabian Ruiz rose through the ranks at Real Betis before making his debut for the BalompieRuiz’s first team in 2016. However, Ruiz’s stint with the senior squad only lasted one season before being loaned to fellow Spanish Elche in January 2017.

The 25-year-old managed one goal and two assists in 18 appearances for Elche before returning to Betis in June of the same year. Ruiz went on to make 35 appearances for his childhood team during the 2017-18 season, scoring three times and assisting six more.

His impressive and composed performances in midfield immediately caught the attention of several top clubs including Barcelona. However, Ruiz eventually moved to Naples in the summer of 2018.

During his three years at Napoli, the Spaniard made 146 appearances, scored 20 goals and provided 13 assists. Ruiz has consistently captured the attention of football purists with his passing range, composure on the ball, and vision. He was part of the Napoli squad that won the Coppa Italia 2019-2020. He also has 15 caps and a goal for the Spanish national team.

If Barcelona manage to sign Ruiz in one of the next transfer windows, that would be a huge boost for the club. However, they will face some competition for his signing with Manchester United who are also said to be interested in the player.
