Berlin Zoo’s famous little twin pandas celebrated their first birthday last week with a special frozen cake and a serving of snow from the penguin house. Pit and Paule – Chinese names Meng Xiang and Meng Yuan – were the first pandas to be born in Germany and have become a flagship attraction at the capital’s zoo since their public debut in January. They are loaned by China, just like their parents. The cubs, which weighed less than 7 ounces at birth, now weigh around 62 pounds each. Zookeepers brought the duo a frozen number 1 cake made from beet juice, apples, sweet potatoes and bamboo. The creation was covered with a portion of snow.
