College football teams on shock alert in week 4

After a near-perfect Week 2, Upset Alert won one of five Week 3 games with Michigan State blowing up Miami. Each of the other four games saw the front-runner going about business, although Purdue stretched Notre Dame until the end of the fourth quarter and Virginia Tech almost got over a rough start against West Virginia.

This is the top-to-bottom nature of Upset Alert. Even in situations where the underdog has a chance, a bouncing ball somehow – Virginia Tech’s last pass on fourth and the three-yard line goal fell incomplete – can determine whether a team succeeds in the upheaval or fails. This workout ended up being one of 3 where the Hokies pushed inside the Mountaineer’s 10-yard line but failed to come away with no points.

Weekly reminder: these are not absolute predictions. Rather, they are games that stand out because they contain the ingredients for a potential upheaval, if the right conditions present themselves. We will always choose five games: generally four games with lower point spreads and always at least one “Wild Card” game where a team is favored by 10 points or more.

Here’s a look at this week’s Upset Alert picks.
