How has Diego Rico been doing since leaving AFC Bournemouth?

Diego Rico was a very important part of the Bournemouth squad for the past three seasons after joining the club from Leganes in the summer of 2018.

The left-back initially struggled to break into Bournemouth’s starting lineup in his first full season with the Cherries. That meant he had only managed to make five starts and 12 Premier League appearances in the 2018/19 campaign.

However, Rico managed to work his way into Eddie Howe’s plans more consistently during the 2019/20 Premier League season.

The defender made 27 starts for the Cherries and provided four assists during that span while helping Bournemouth record five clean sheets.

Despite Rico’s form for Bournemouth in the 2019/20 Premier League season, he was unable to help keep the Cherries in the top flight and Howe’s side ended up relegated to the championship.

Howe left that summer, but Rico remained a key part of Bournemouth’s plans for the Championship.

The left-back managed to score his first league goal for the club in a 4-0 win over Barnsley in December 2020. He ended the campaign with one goal and three assists in his 32 appearances.

Rico, however, decided to leave Bournemouth this summer, although the Cherries failed to secure promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.

It came with Real Sociedad giving him the chance to come back to La Liga and play in the top flight of a big European league again.

The defender managed to taste the action for the first time with his new club during his preseason with him against Eibar in early August.

Quiz: do you know which club these 30 former AFC Bournemouth players play in?

Rico took to his personal Instagram account to express his joy at making his first appearance for his new club after this game.

However, since then Rico has been unable to make a single La Liga appearance for Real Sociedad after suffering a muscle injury early in the campaign.

So he has had a watch mandate for Real Sociedad so far this season as they have had a very strong start to the campaign scoring 21 points in their first ten games. This sees them at the top of the table as it stands.

The left-back recently revealed on his personal Instagram account that he is now back in training for Real Sociedad.

This suggests he is set to make his first La Liga appearance for them in the not too distant future.
