Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane said he did not expect to participate in Thursday’s 5-1 Europa Conference League victory over Slovenian minnows NS Mura, but hoped his hat-trick in the second half -time could change its national form for the club.

Kane, who had been linked with a move to Manchester City this summer before deciding to stay in London, has yet to score in the Premier League this season.

With Tottenham leading 2-1 thanks to Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso, Kane scored his second half with a quick hat-trick – his 13th for the team – and looked forward to Sunday’s league game against Aston Villa.

“Every forward wants to score goals. I probably didn’t expect to come in today, but it’s good to have the minutes,” Kane told BT Sport.

“Every time you see the ball hit the back of the net it’s a good feeling. Hopefully we can catch it over the weekend. It was nice to come off the bench and score a few goals.”

Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo said the game requires an injection of energy, which substitutes Kane, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura provide.

“Today was important to play like we did,” he said. “A good result and so we recover better and prepare better for the next one. Lots of positive points.”

Tottenham have lost their last three league games and are 11th, three places behind Villa.
