Payton Akana gallops his horse to the line while posting a time of 21.97 seconds in the junior barrel races Friday afternoon in the Makawao Stampede prelims at Oskie Rice Arena. The Stampede, a rebranding of the longtime Makawao Rodeo following the end of a partnership with the Maui Roping Club last year, kicked off its traditional July 4th weekend after the event was canceled l last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event runs until Sunday.
