Full-time: Manchester United 3-2 Arsenal

Despite being delayed in the strangest of circumstances, Manchester United returned to win with thrilling style.

With Carrick’s job as an interim now complete, the stage is set for Rangnick to get United back on track.

As for Arsenal, a valiant effort but they stammered towards the end and could not take the few opportunities that are felt.

Arsenal remain fifth while United move up to seventh.

It has become a basketball game!

89 ‘- This match turned into a spectacle from start to finish that all neutrals were hoping for!

It looks like United’s response at the end of the game is to look for another goal on the clock. The only problem with that is that he leaves them open for a counter.

That should make for a fun final couple of minutes.

The game opened in the last five minutes

77 ‘- Chances at both ends after Ronaldo gave United the lead.

Aubameyang’s point-blank shot goes straight into de Gea’s clutches.

Still potential for a bit of drama in this game.

70 ‘- Odegaard was deemed to have fouled Fred in the box, Martin Atkinson went to review on the field monitor and gave the hosts a free kick which Ronaldo duly converted.

United significantly more aggressive out of possession in the second half

63 ‘- I joked earlier that Rangnick wouldn’t be on the phone with Carrick despite his presence. But on current viewing, it might as well be!

United are fighting to win the ball way higher than in the first half, and their first goal also came from pressing high.

Is it because of Rangnick? Can players just smell the blood? Can they maintain this intensity?

I guess we’ll find out.

Odegaard with an instant response for Arsenal! 2-2!

55 ‘- Arsenal restored parity with a goal strangely similar to United a few minutes earlier. Martinelli enters the box for Odegaard to finish behind de Gea for the first time.

Now to catch my breath …

Thierry Henry has his say on the particular opening of Arsenal …

Speaking at halftime as an expert, former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry recalled his childhood playing football to make sense of Smith-Rowe’s goal in the first half.

“The last time I saw that was when I was 11,” said Henry. “And my goalie was out for a sandwich and left his goal. We all turned and we were down 1-0. “

Half time! Manchester 1-1 Arsenal

Half time! Manchester 1-1 Arsenal

Well, this is shaping up to be another classic between these two teams!

After a curious start, Manchester United appear to be returning to the game with sustained periods of possession. But, apart from their equalizer at the stroke of half-time, the hosts haven’t really tested Arsenal’s goal.

A look at United players’ average positions suggests they lack that breadth on the right with Rashford coming in. Perhaps switching sides with Sancho should restore some symmetry.

As for Arsenal, they started to press United but gradually regressed and allowed them to gain momentum and get back into the game.

Everything to play at the break!

1-1! Fernandes equalizes for United!

44 ‘- A well-crafted goal from United. Sancho slips the ball into the box to Fred who squares the ball to Fernandes. The Portuguese shoot for the first time and restore parity for the hosts.

Play and just before half-time too!

Arsenal’s goal was a game-changer

34 ‘- As expected, Arsenal’s bizarre opening caused a change in the game.

Manchester United have moved from a deeper sitting position and choosing their moments to dominating possession and Arsenal, but the hosts have yet to find a way out.

Arsenal scores but de Gea is injured

15 ‘- Smith-Rowe scores a delicious left-footed volley from the edge of the box but, as the ball came in, de Gea was on the ground squeezing his foot after being trampled in the corner kick moments before.

It looks like the goal will be given as Fred was the player standing on de Gea’s foot and therefore no foul could be called.

I’m not sure he’s on the phone with Carrick, but I’m sure he’ll have his thoughts no matter what happens tonight.

4 ‘- At the start of the game, but Manchester United appear to be content to let Arsenal have the ball before pinching it with Rashford and Sancho darting behind on each flank.

It will be interesting to see how this Tavares vs Sancho battle develops as a result.
