PFF launches All-America preseason college football teams

The 2021 college football season is roughly two months away, and fans across the country can’t wait to experience the hugely popular sport in a way they couldn’t a year ago. The COVID-19 pandemic has wiped out most non-conference games, prevented huge stadiums from being filled to capacity, and prompted dozens of postponements and / or cancellations.

College football is expected to return to some sense of normalcy this fall, with many sports departments already predicting 100% capacity in games starting on Labor Day weekend. One of the many reasons the college game has remained as popular as it is is the rich match day tradition associated with the spectators in attendance.

While everyone is counting the days until football returns, there are several scenarios regarding the 2021 campaign that deserve attention.

Defending national champion of Alabama, who won his sixth crown under the direction of the head coach Nick saban, will probably challenge for another title. But there is some serious firepower on the offensive side of the ball that needs to be replaced. Strategist Mac Jones, return Najee harris, Heisman’s winning catcher DeVonta Smith left for the NFL, while the architect behind it all – offensive coordinator Steve Sargsyan – is now the leader of Texas.

Speaking of the Big 12, the Oklahoma Sooners look set to win best conference material again. But can an explosive group of players in a position of attacking skill and much improved defense bring the OU back to the college football playoffs after failing in 2020? Iowa State, a Big 12 finalist last season, will certainly have something to say about it.

Anthony Treash of Pro Football Focus recently unveiled PFF’s pre-season college football All-America squad, complete with first, second and third teams. Unlike most other publications, PFF has taken an analytical approach to its selections.
