Scott McTominay close to Premier League milestone for Manchester United

Scott McTominay is set to join an esteemed group of Manchester United players.

The Scotsman could make his 100th Premier League appearance against Watford, having already reached that overall milestone of United’s appearances against Sheffield United in 2020.

If he were to make the trip to Watford on Saturday, his overall total for the club would rise to 146 appearances and see him rise to the level of Paul Parker, Mike Phelan – the club’s current deputy manager – and Noel Cantwell.

Among the current squad members, McTominay has 42 appearances behind compatriot Nemanja Matic, Victor Lindelof ahead of the Serbian with 173 appearances in all competitions.

The Scotsman has scored 10 times during that span, including the daring lob over Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson in the 2-0 derby victory in 2020 at Old Trafford.

There was an element of doubt creeping in as to whether he would be deemed fit to travel to Hertfordshire after missing both Scotland’s World Cup qualifiers with a throat virus.

But he gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a boost ahead of the clash with Watford, revealing he had “recovered well”.

Jose Mourinho gave the 24-year-old his first league start in 2017 at the Emirates Stadium, but it was not a success in his top career as Arsenal won 2-0.

Their first start at Old Trafford came against Crystal Palace that season as they won by the same score with youngsters Josh Harrop, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe also starring.
