Surprising departure of Stoke City transfer confirmed

John Obi Mikel sealed a move from Stoke City to the Kuwait Sports Club, although he did not sign a new contract with the Potters until last month.

The veteran Nigeria international was a key figure in Michael O’Neill’s squad, appearing in 39 games as the Staffordshire side finished in the middle of the table.

There had been doubts about Mikel’s long-term future, with his contract expiring this summer, but it has been confirmed that he will extend his stay.

However, in a surprising twist, the 34-year-old did not leave the Bet365 stadium, with the Kuwaiti side announcing his arrival on their social networks last night, with Mikel suspected of signing what is described as a “big ticket” contract.

While his absence will be felt by O’Neill, it’s no secret that the Potters face a tough summer financially as they prepare for another year outside of the Premier League.

Cutting down on the payroll is a priority for the club this summer, so Mikel’s departure will certainly help on that front, although more exits are still expected in the coming weeks.

What was the score the last time Stoke City faced each of those 25 teams?

Nottingham Forest

4-1 victory

The verdict

It’s a surprising decision considering Mikel had pledged his future at the club last month and O’Neill would no doubt have planned to use the midfielder to move forward.

But, football can be unpredictable and while this is obviously a big blow to the Potters, it will help them keep costs down.

Now it’s about O’Neill trying to find a replacement and it will be interesting to see how that impacts Stoke’s potential outings this summer.
