Mike Engler thought it could be a high-scoring game when Northern Kentucky senior football players gathered for this year’s East-West All-Star Game, based on both teams’ offensive performances in a 7-on-7 scrimmage earlier this week.

Ryle’s head coach and Team West head coach were impressed with his team’s defensive effort Thursday night in Dixie Heights.

The West defense controlled the game against the East offense, intercepting four passes en route to a 14-0 win over the East.

“There were some really good defensive players on our side,” Engler said. “Our defense showed some life.”

Boone County defensive back Dvion Davis was named the game’s most valuable player for assisting the defensive effort. West interrupted East running play and constantly ran East quarterbacks to escape the pressure.

“We were just trying to have fun before we went to college,” Davis said. “We just came here and had fun. Lots of friends here, lots of connections. We came in with the mindset of not biting the moves as they unfolded.

Said Engler: “Dvion impressed me. He played really well. He was still there.

West quarterback Drew Warth (5) throws a pass during the East vs. West All-Star Football game at Dixie Heights High School on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

Cooper quarterback Drew Warth served as the West’s QB for the vast majority of the game.

“It was a great opportunity,” Warth said. “I absolutely loved my whole time here. I had a great time getting to know the coaches and the players.

Warth was effective at moving the ball the entire first half, but the West side couldn’t convert that into scoring until the first half was over.

On the first scrimmage play of the game, Warth threw a long pass to Scott’s receiver Cam Patterson for 44 yards. Holmes’ Quantez Calloway ran for 12 yards on the next play, but the drive stalled on a missed field goal.

Warth had two long completions after that canceled while taking calls.

“I think they were playing against our guys, so we were able to take advantage of that. We managed to score some points late in the half, which was huge,” Warth said. “The on-hold calls really hurt us, but we made up for it.”

Team West made a splash again in the second quarter when Quantez Calloway rushed for 24 and 11 yards, and Tayquan rushed for 13.

The drive stopped on fourth down when West attempted a passing trick with Quantez throwing to Warth, but the pass was incomplete. Tayquan broke the scoreless tie with his long touchdown run. Teams had to go for two, and West fell short.

On the next play for the East, Cooper’s Brady Bond intercepted Covington Catholic’s Preston Agee at West 45 and returned the ball 35 yards at East 20.

On third and short, Warth completed a pass to Beechwood’s Parker Mason at the 5-yard line. On the next play, Warth found Ryle’s Hunter Vaughan in the end zone for a touchdown. Vaughan put in a nice fingertip hold and was able to stay in bounds for the score with 9.6 seconds left in the half.

Quantez Calloway converted the two-point game to make it 14-0 at halftime.

Later in the quarter, Conner’s Clayton Melcher made three consecutive rushes of 10, 6 and 6 yards for West in a drive that ended in a punt.

Early in the fourth quarter, West got two interceptions from Boone County’s Skyler Sears and Conner’s Carter Lindemann.

With 6 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Warth threw a long pass to Beechwood’s Parker Mason, Mason drawing a pass interference penalty to keep the drive up 14-0.

Engler credited Lloyd Memorial head coach Kyle Niederman, the defensive coordinator for that game, with a great game plan.
